Dr. Watkins is a native of Mississippi, raised in Natchez. He is a graduate of Millsaps College(class of 1968) in Jackson, MS. Following two years of graduate study in immunology at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, MS, he entered the University of Mississippi School of Medicine completing an M.D. degree in 1974.
Fulfilling a desire to be a good doctor first, he then completed a straight medical internship at the Northwestern University in Chicago, followed by a year of general surgery training at Loyola University in Maywood, IL. Four years of general orthopedic training at the University of Utah were followed by a microsurgical fellowship at Duke University and a clinical hand fellowship at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.
He has been in a solo surgical practice of the upper extremity since January 1982. He has been certified and recertified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He has received the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Hand Surgery issued by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and most recently recertified in 2015.
